TEAM FROM NCDC ARRIVE CROSS RIVER STATE TO ACCESS STATE’S EFFORT IN FIGHT AGAINST COVID19

INDIAN OFFICIALS ON ALERT, AS CYCLONE AMPHAN PREPARES TO MAKE LANDFALL ON THE EAST COAST.

Representatives of the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, the Federal Ministry of Health and the National Primary HealthCare Development Agency have arrived Calabar to access the state’s effort in the fight against COVID-19.

The 7 man team which landed at the Magaret Ekpo International Airport in a chartered aircraft landed at exa ctly 9:05, Monday morning.

Head of the delegtation, Dr.  Omobolanle Olowu said the team is proud about Cross River’s adoptive measure in the fight against thye deadly virus which result is visible, making the state one, among the only two states without a confirmed case.

Olowu added that the federal government seeks to adopt the state’s approaches.

Receiving the guests, the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Betta Edu admonished the team to set up a testing centre in the state for easy and prompt testing.

Meanwhile, president Muhammadu Buhari will address Nigerians on Monday, as the first phase of the gradual easing of the COVID-19 lockdown comes to an end.

This was revealed by Aliyu Sani, the national coordinator of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19.

Cross River State executive council has approved the sum of two million dollars, for the direct procurement and airlifting of items from china, for the production of personal protection equipment by the garment factory.

Briefing journalists at the end of the meeting, the state Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Asu Okang, said the council considered the move critical for the continuous protection of Cross Riverians against the ravaging coronavirus.

The approval is for the procurement of materials for the production of face masks for distribution to children, pupils and students in both primary and secondary schools of the state when schools finally reopen.

Meanwhile, the garment factory has also promised to make available nose masks for representatives of media houses across the country, free of charge.

Cross River state Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Stella Odey-Ekpo, has distributed post Covid-19 palliatives which included Fertilizers, Herbicides, hand sanitizers and nose masks, to the people of Ugaga-ward, in Yala Local Government Area of Cross River State.

The Commissioner who spoke to journalists, reiterated the strong will of the state government to ensure the Safety of all cross Riverians this period.

The Principal Counsel, Basic Rights Counsel Initiative, BRCI, James Ibor, says the cases of domestic violence in the state have increased, following the imposed restriction on movement caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ibor who spoke in an interview with our correspondent on Sunday in Calabar, also expressed worry that domestic violence cases have been under-reported.

The legal practitioner who encouraged women and other victims to report their abusers to the appropriate authorities, blamed societal norms for the pressure put on women which causes them to be silent even when they are abused.

The Cross River state Police command has confirmed that suspected cultists killed Ekpenyong Akom an aide to Governor Ben Ayade.

The state police Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police Irene Ugbo who confirmed the killing of Akom also revealed that the police is investigating the matter.

On his part, the State Security Adviser to Governor Ayade, South, Ani Esin lamented the rival clash, describe the incident as unfortunate.

Indian officials are on alert, as Cyclone Amphan is due to make landfall on the east coast.

The storm is expected to make landfall on Wednesday afternoon, and will hit West Bengal and Odisha states.

However, twenty relief teams have been dispatched there, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is due to chair a high-level meeting, to further discuss preparations for the storm.

Elsewhere, global health leaders are set to push for an independent review of the response to the Covid-19 pandemic, at the UN’s World Health Assembly.

Monday’s virtual meeting brings together envoys from 194 member states, of the World Health Organization.

21 year old Samantha Diaz, from Harlem, New York City, was told she had won the public vote by host Ryan Seacrest, who was broadcasting from his garage.

She heard the news while clutching an iPad, which was connected to a call with her grandmother, who brought her up.

The World Health Organization and the International Olympic Committee, IOC, on Sunday signed an agreement to work together to promote health through sport and physical activity.

In a report posted on the WHO website, the Director-General, Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus, said he was pleased to formalize the longstanding partnership with the IOC.

Ghebreyesus said WHO works not only to respond to disease, but also to help people realize their healthiest lives, adding that the partnership will do exactly that.
