The 3 branches of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, in Cross River State and the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, JUSUN, in the State, on Monday, protested at the governor’s office, in Calabar, lamenting the non-implementation of financial autonomy of the state judiciary.
Our correspondent reports that the unions moved in a motorcade from the judiciary headquarters, in Calabar at about 10:40 am, to the government house, chanting solidarity songs and calling for immediate action from the government.
Reading a letter, he co-signed with the Chairmen of the Ogoja and Ikom NBA branches, the Calabar NBA Chairman, Barr. Paul Ebiala said the demand for financial autonomy is one of the key parameters for enthroning independence of the judiciary.
The Cross River State Deputy Governor, IvaraEsu, while receiving the letter on behalf of the Governor,assured the aggrieved NBA and JUSUN members, that the Ayade-led administration would not do anything below what the Constitution stipulates.
The peaceful protest, held simultaneously across all the states of the federation, including the FCT – Abuja,as directed by the Nigerian Bar Association.
