Commuters who ply the Calabar – Itu Highway on Monday, july 12th, 2021, decried the incessant molestation, harassment and robbery they experience amongst others, due to the deteriorating state of the road.
Speaking in an interview with our correspondent at Odukpani , the truck drivers who said they spend nights on the road, also noted that trucks up to a thousand, usually get held up in traffic.
“ some places, we truck driver cannot pass so we park here, like two or three weeks now we have been here. For now people that are doing the road are doing somewhere else like power plant after the power plant, there is hold up there too they have to work on that place so we can pass. A truck sink down here they need to remove still put stone base.”
“ the road is very bad. This one you see now is our company that use our hand to work it. For six days now, this place have been filed with vehicles. Right now, we are still trying to work on this side. From power plant to Calabar river, we drivers they collect our phones, they rape women…”
“ the road no good at all, e dey very bad me I don dey here for like one week now. Na yesterday dem come just try do the road before people fit dey pass. Make dem do something about the road. At least, if na patch, make dem batch am”
The drivers however called on the government, to help put an end to the recurring menace.
Meanwhile, Some business owners at UyamaMarket in Odukpani local government area decried their possible eviction from the market where they earn their living, as a result of the on-going road dualization.
The traders, who spoke with our correspondent at the market on Monday, said they had been contacted by the authority to that effect.
The respondents, while appealing for a better understanding from the authorities, however, disclosed that they are yet to know the exact day the evacuation will take place.
